512 byte sectors in use on device /dev/sdi. This is suboptimal.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 (PPC64 architecture)

Situation

The following report is experienced in /var/log/messages:
 
512 byte sectors in use on device /dev/sdi.  This is suboptimal; 1024 or greater is ideal.
 
This is caused due to the default sector size used with mkfs.xfs being set to 512.

Resolution

To avoid the message, the file system partition must be created with a sector size of 1024 or greater:
 
mkfs.xfs -s 1024 <device>
