The rescan-scsi-bus.sh --forcerescan option removes SCSI devices

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)

Situation

With sg3_utils version 1.40-0.21.1 and newer the --forcerescan option is fixed. Prior to this version specifying the option did not work as expected. The option should normally be avoided and only be used in case of emergency - e.g. if there is a kernel bug or a LUN is not pointing to the correct target device any more (changes done on the target).

NOTE: Running the script with this option can result in it removing in-use underlying devices!

Resolution

If possible avoid using the --forcerescan or --forceremove options.

Cause

Both the options --forcerescan and --forceremove remove the devices as a first step.
