Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 SP1

Situation

Root device "/" is a logical volume (LVM2)

After an upgrade from SLES10 GA to SLES10 Support Pack 1, the second stage instalation boot sequence hangs:

ERROR: Waiting for device /dev// to appear: ............not found -- exiting to /bin/sh

Resolution

The problem is caused by a bug in mkinitrd that incorrectly matches EVMS/LVM devices.
Fix is included in mkinitrd-1.2-106.61

Workaround:
  1. Boot from DVD => Start Installation => "Boot Installed system"
  2. Download and install mkinitrd-1.2-106.61or later
  3. Rebuild initrd with lvm2 support:
    mkinitrd -f lvm2

Additional Information

It might be necessary to run depmod in some cases before building the new initrd.
For autoyast installation problems with root device on LVM see TID#3523475 Auto installation with LVM on root fails.
