This document (7001053) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 Support Pack 1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

Whether using for troubleshooting problems or for other reasons, there are times where it would be convenient to disable the auto mounting of USB drives.

Resolution

Logged in as the user for which this functionality is to be disabled, open the Gnome Configuration Editor using the following:

Computer --> More Applications --> System --> Gnome Configuration Editor

Once the Gnome Configuration Editor window appears drill down into the volume_manager section
/ --> desktop --> gnome --> volume_manager
With "volume_manager" a screen with option similar to the following will appear:

Uncheck the "automount_drives".  USB drives will no longer automatically mount upon insertion.

NOTE:  The desktop icon for the USB drive may still be created on the desktop.  To mount the drive simply right click on the icon and select mount.  Also, this will only affect the user that is logged in when the above steps are followed.
