Samba file lock requests take a long time to be granted causing slowness

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

Applications that access files on a Samba share and ask for file locks are slow.

Resolution

If the Samba Op-lock code is set to do a delay before granting a lock you can see this issue.
In testing the following setting in the smb.conf file a 9.9 second delay was seen.

oplock break wait time = 10000

The default is:
oplock break wait time =0

Here is what is says in the smb.conf file with regards to this parameter.

Warning

DO NOT CHANGE THIS PARAMETER UNLESS YOU HAVE READ AND UNDERSTOOD THE SAMBA OPLOCK CODE.
