Graphical display stays black after resume from suspend to RAM (S3)

This document (7010115) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Point of Service
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11

Situation

Under some cirtumstances the graphical display of the affected machine stays black after resume from suspend
to RAM (S3) if a wireless network card Atheros AR5008 has been installed into the system. There is some conflict
in the PCI settings that cannot been resolved by the BIOS when waking up.

Resolution

Unload the ath5k module before suspend and reload it after the resume.
Additionally force PCI space and graphical mode saving when calling s2ram.

To achieve this do the following:
1. Add the line S2RAM_OPTS="-f -p -m" to the file /etc/pm/config.d/suspend
2. Generate the file /etc/pm/sleep.d/99ath9k:

#!/bin/bash
case "$1"in
hibernate|suspend)
modprobe -r ath9k
;;
thaw|resume)
modprobe ath9k
;;
*)
;;
esac
exit 0

and then do a chmod +x /etc/pm/sleep.d/99ath9k
