Unable to create logical volume in SLES 11 SP3 rescue mode

This document (7015616) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3 (SLES 11 SP3)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 3 (SLED 11 SP3)

Situation

In SLES11 SP3 rescue mode creation of logical volume fails:

Rescue:~ # lvcreate -L 1G -n testLogVol testvg
/dev/testvg/testLogVol: not found: device not cleared
Aborting. Failed to wipe start of new LV.

Resolution

As a workaround option '--noudevsync' can be used. It disables udev synchronization and process will not wait for notification from udev:

Rescue:~ # lvcreate -L 1G -n testLogVol testvg --noudevsync
  Logical volume "testLogVol" created

Cause

Due to missing /lib/udev/rules.d/11-dm-lvm.rules creation fails.
