Unable to create LVM RAID volumes

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11

Situation

Attempting to create an LVM RAID with "lvcreate --type raid5" results in the following error message:
FATAL: Module dm_raid not found.
/sbin/modprobe failed: 1
raid6: Required device-mapper target(s) not detected in your kernel

Resolution

It is not possible to create LVM RAID volumes as this LVM mode is unsupported on SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 and the necessary technical capabilities are not provided.
