device-mapper: remove ioctl on failed: Device or resource busy

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)

Situation

On a system with root on lvm during shutdown (or reboot) the following messages are shown:


Unmounting file systems                                            
done                                                          
  device-mapper: remove ioctl on  failed: Device or resource busy  
  device-mapper: remove ioctl on  failed: Device or resource busy  
  device-mapper: remove ioctl on  failed: Device or resource busy  


 The shutdown completes without any hangs.

Resolution

The device-mapper update, device-mapper-1.02.77-0.15.14, released July 2016 includes the patch to resolve this problem.
Please install the recommended update.

Cause

The messages are because /etc/init.d/boot.lvm calls 'vgchange -a n', which obviously fails on the /dev/system/root as that is still mounted.
