After a kernel upgrade the timeout entry is missing from the grub configuration

This document (7018256) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3 (SLES 11 SP3)

Situation

With /boot using a separate partition / device, after updating the kernel the timeout entry is missing from /boot/grub/menu.lst resulting in the server not automatically booting anymore after a restart / reset.

Resolution

Verify the disk space usage of /boot and either free space by for example removing older / previous installed kernel versions etc. or increasing the size for /boot.

Cause

Due to insufficient space on /boot during the upgrade the grub files are not properly updated resulting in the following error messages logged in /var/log/pbl.log:

2016-11-09 14:31:22 <3> pbl-4185.2 FileIO::WriteFile.141: Error: Failed to close /boot/grub/menu.lst.new: No space left on device
2016-11-09 14:31:22 <3> pbl-4185.2 Tools::AddSection.1499: Error: An error occurred while writing the settings.
