SUSE today announced the number of registered users building cloud-ready application images with SUSE Studio has more than doubled in one year to 233,500. Additionally, the number of cloud-ready application images built using SUSE Studio surpassed one million. More and more customers worldwide are realizing the convenience and time-to-market advantages of the industry's only solution available today that streamlines the configuration, deployment and management of cloud-ready application images.
SUSE Studio provides an alternative to the inherent challenges of building, deploying and maintaining software application images and software appliances across physical, virtual and cloud environments. SUSE Studio is a key component of the SUSE® Appliance Program, a comprehensive business and technology program that helps independent software vendors (ISVs) simplify appliance creation, reduce development and support costs, and extend their applications to the cloud.
"SUSE Studio is the only solution available today that makes it easy to create portable application stacks in minutes that can be deployed anywhere, including private and public cloud environments," said Sabine Soellheim, solution marketing manager for Emerging Technologies & Cloud at SUSE. "SUSE Studio revolutionizes the way software is packaged and delivered. The remarkable increase in adoption in such a short period of time demonstrates that customers are getting real value through this tool."
Analysts are expecting continued growth in the software appliance field. In a 2010 report, IDC projected the software appliance market to grow more than ten-fold in five years, from $347 million in 2009 to $3.7 billion in 2014. IDC recently interviewed five ISVs using SUSE Studio and found that, with minimal investment, these ISVs recognized an average three-year ROI of 566 percent and earned back their investment, on average, in less than seven months.*
SUSE Studio has generated broad support from customers and partners, including the following:
- In January 2011, Dell and SUSE formed a partnership to build, deploy and maintain a wide range of Dell-branded software appliances using SUSE Studio. Recently, SUSE and Dell OEM Solutions division announced plans to build and deploy application stacks based on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server onto Dell OEM Solutions' embedded, built-to-order and customized systems using SUSE Studio.
- Since August 2010, Amazon Web Services has offered hourly-based pricing and support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Most recently, SUSE made it even easier to extend applications to the cloud adding one-click-deployment directly from SUSE Studio and SUSE Gallery to Amazon EC2.
- Since April 2010, SUSE and IBM have collaborated to deliver software appliances across physical, virtual and cloud environments. In early 2011, IBM made its highly successful database software DB2 available as an adaptable template within SUSE Studio which greatly simplifies the ability to build appliances based on DB2. In July 2011, SUSE Studio 1.2 delivered the ability to build and deploy software appliances for IBM mainframe environments giving customers more options and flexibility to deploy mission-critical workloads to hardware and software environments best suited for those workloads.
Availability
SUSE Studio is available in two editions: SUSE Studio Standard Edition for ISV customers and SUSE Studio Advanced Edition for enterprise customers. SUSE Gallery is a free, web-based venue for ISVs and customers to publish, share and promote software application images and appliances.
