Companies around the world such as the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Lockheed Martin, Swiss Re and T-Systems are increasing server uptime, improving operating efficiency and accelerating innovation by using commercial open source solutions from SUSE®. These companies discussed how they are using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and related technologies in support of their diverse business objectives at SUSECon 2014, SUSE's annual end user conference being held this week in Orlando, Florida.
Nils Brauckmann, president and general manager of SUSE, said, "IT organizations today face tremendous pressure and risk being marginalized by competing priorities in the market and within their own companies. We appreciate the many customers who have put their trust in us and our solutions, and we take great satisfaction in being able to help enterprises such as these regain control over their complex IT infrastructures."
Hong Kong Jockey Club—a world-class horse racing operator, entertainment provider, charity provider and one of Hong Kong's largest employers—exclusively uses SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to run its information distribution system to support its betting services.
"Our systems are too critical to rely solely on community-based support," said Damian Lum, enterprise architect for the Hong Kong Jockey Club. "We selected SUSE technology to ensure we get maximum availability from our systems through enterprise support from a trusted partner."
Lockheed Martin—a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 113,000 people worldwide—is no stranger to open source software, using it for a variety of operational and research programs. Lockheed Martin uses SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with the Real Time Extension to power the complex simulators fighter pilots use for testing and training.
"Our engineering simulators require hard real time behaviors and high-precision micro-second system responses to function properly and provide a realistic environment for the testing we do," said Robert Lake, deputy chief engineer for Simulations at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. "Operating systems we select must meet those criteria."
Swiss Re—a leading wholesale provider of reinsurance, insurance and other insurance-based forms of risk transfer—exclusively uses SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on its SAP systems that support reinsurance, finance, procurement and human resources.
"Five years ago we began seriously looking at new platforms to replace our aging, expensive, proprietary Solaris estate," said Alexander Türk, vice president at Swiss Re. "By migrating to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, we were able to meet our performance and availability objectives while significantly reducing platform hardware and costs."
T-Systems—an operator of information and communication technology systems for multinational corporations and public sector institutions—first began using open source software 15 years ago and has now standardized on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server at its data centers in Germany, Houston, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom to enable the delivery of SAP services to its global customers.
"Not all Linux distribution providers are alike," said Lars Micheel, head of GDU SAP Solution Delivery for T-Systems. "SUSE has consistently delivered the enterprise support we need to ensure we meet the service-level agreements we have with our customers while we provide our services at competitive prices."
