(hd0,0)/message has wrong format, press key to continue

This document (3801195) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

After a brand new installation, a script was run (third party) which created a "message" file under the /boot directory. During boot, however, the system was confused between the message file and the message cpio archive.

Resolution

Check the file type of the "message" file under the /boot directory by typing the following:
file (ie. file message)

If there is a message file there that is not a cpio archive, then move it elsewhere out of this directory and reboot.
