Enabled Remote Administration (VNC) on SLED 11 but getting gray screen when connecting.

This document (7002955) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise 11

Situation

In YaST under the Network Devices group, select Remote Administration (VNC) and configure it for remote access.

Attempt to vnc to the system.  The result will be a gray screen with a mouse cursor.

Resolution

The system needs to allow a xdmcp connection.  One configuration file was not changed when VNC was enabled.

Edit the file "/etc/gdm/gdm.schemas" and find the following section:

<schema>
     <key>xdmcp/Enable</key>
     <signature>b</signature>
     <default>false</default>
</schema>

Change the "false" to "true" and save.  It should look like this:

<schema>
     <key>xdmcp/Enable</key>
     <signature>b</signature>
     <default>true</default>
</schema>

Restart the system to have the change recognized.
