Here When You Need Us

YAST is not showing interfaces but ifconfig does. The network is working.

This document (7018686) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)

Situation

YAST is not showing any network configuration.
ifconfig shows the interfaces and bindings
hwinfo --netcard also shows working network cards and drivers
pinging the default gateway proves that packets are being sent and received.

Checking the network status displays this error:
#/etc/init.d/network status
Checking optional network interfaces:
eth0      Warning: ifcfg-eth0 modifies interface type from 'eth' to 'qeth'.
                       Please open a bug report.

You may also see this same error in the /var/log/boot.msg file or the /var/log/messages file.

Resolution

Check the # /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth? files for the following line:
INTERFACETYPE='qeth'

Remove 'qeth' so that the line in each ifcfg-eth? file looks like this:
INTERFACETYPE=

The server does not need to be rebooted.
