How to obtain application core dump from running process

All SUSE products

Situation

A core dump of a process needs to be captured for troubleshooting purposes as the process seems to hang - and no reason or message within the logs.

Resolution

To attach gdb to a running process run:

$ gdb --pid=<pid>

or:

$ gdb -p <pid>

Within gdb use following commands to create a dump, then detach from running process:

(gdb) gcore
Saved corefile core.<pid>
(gdb) detach
