Sound is not working on SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

This document (3285777) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
openSUSE 10.2

Situation

Sound is no longer working after updating to the latest version of the desktop. This could be a particular driver issue but most likely hal-manager was not able to properly setup the ACLs. One setup that causes this is if you are using a non-standard login manager (in other words not KDM or GDM).

Resolution

One easy way to properly setup the ACLs is to go into Yast, Security and Users, User Management, Edit, Details, and add the audio group to the user.

Additional Information

Troubleshooting

  1. To see if you have the proper ACLs assigned you need to open a terminal and type ls -la /dev/snd/. You should see a "+" symbol on the files with the audio group.
  2. Now type getfacl /dev/snd/seq to verify that you have the write right setup.
