Unable to browse windows networks using SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

No networks show up when browsing the Windows Network section of Nautilus.

Resolution

The release notes state that SuSEfirewall2 is enabled by default unless chosen otherwise. That means that by default, you cannot log in from remote systems. It also interferes with network browsing and multicast applications, such as SLP, Samba ("Network Neighborhood”), and some games. You can fine-tune the firewall settings using YaST.

Therefore in order to have windows network browsing you need to fine-tune the workstations firewall setting to allow the following ports.

137/udp
138/udp
139/tcp
445/tcp
