SLED10 : Using the standard VESA with the GUI

This document (3909537) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) will not start after configuration through SaX.

Resolution

Reconfigure the X11 (Xorg) graphical interface to use the standard VESA driver. This process is done in three phases.

Place the workstation into text-based mode.

If the workstation has not been booted yet, this can be done by highlighting the "SUSE Linux Enterprise 10" option and typing "init 3", then pressing enter.

If the workstation has already been booted up, press Control-Alt-F1. This will switch the console to a text-based terminal. Login at the prompt. Type "init 3", and press enter.

Reconfigure X11.

Run SaX with a driver override :
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa
Configure the desktop as needed, and save the configuration.

Start the graphical mode.

If the workstation does not automatically start the GUI, type "init 5" and press enter at the command prompt. If it still fails to launch, reboot the workstation by typing :
reboot
and pressing the enter key.
