lsusb does not show all devices

This document (7008431) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1

Situation

The output of lsusb on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and  SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 on the same hardware is different and missing entries of sub-devices on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.
Although the devices show up in /var/log/boot.msg they are not displayed with 'lsusb'.

For example on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 'lsusb' returns:

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 04b3:4001 IBM Corp.
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
On SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 'lsusb' returns:

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Using:

# mount -t usbfs usbfs /dev/bus/usb
or
# udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=usb

makes the device(s) appear.

Resolution

The problem is caused by the intel-iamt package.
It installs the file "/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules", but default rules are in /lib/udev/rules.d and not in /etc/udev/rules.d/.
Files in /etc/udev/rules.d/ have precedence over files with the same name in /lib/udev/rules.d/ and therefore the file in /etc/udev/rules.d/ is overwriting the default rules file from udev in /lib/udev/rules.d/, causing the problem.
Removing the RPM and rebooting or running 'udevadm' resolves the problem and the devices show up.

Customers affected by this issue can contact SUSE Technical Services to request an intel-iamt package without the /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules file.

On SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2 the intel-iamt package is not included anymore.

Additional Information

There are other problems with the intel-iamt package. For further information see the following TID 000017596 insserv/chkconfig lms throws errors

Since the package is not maintained anymore there won't be any future support or development. Therefore, the package may as well be removed instead.
