After upgrading to SLES 15 SP6, some libraries appear to be missing

This document (000021515) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP6

Situation

After upgrading to SLES 15 SP6, the following library files that are provided by the package 'glibc-devel' are missing:
  • /usr/lib64/libpthread.so
  • /usr/lib64/libdl.so
  • /usr/lib64/libutil.so
  • /usr/lib64/libanl.so
And, if the package 'glibc-devel-32bit' was installed prior to the upgrade, then these files will be missing:
  • /usr/lib/libpthread.so
  • /usr/lib/libdl.so
  • /usr/lib/libutil.so
  • /usr/lib/libanl.so

Resolution

The static '.a' files for these libraries are now provided in the 'glibc-devel' and 'glibc-devel-32bit' packages to maintain compatibility with the commands that were used to build with these libraries in previous versions. It is no longer necessary to include the -lpthread, -ldl, -lutil, or -lanl flags because the libraries are now included with the main library, but these flags will still work as expected and will still dynamically link the libraries.

Cause

For SLES 15 SP6, glibc has been upgraded, and now the libpthread, libdl, libutil, and libanl libraries have been added to the main library so they are no longer provided by separate .so files. It is no longer required to use the -lpthread, -ldl, -lutil, or -lanl flags to use these libaries.

For more information about this change in glibc, see the glibc release notes here: https://sourceware.org/glibc/wiki/Release/2.34#Libraries_merged_into_libc
