LVM symbolic links /dev/$VGNAME/$LVNAME unavailable in SLE11SP3 rescue system

This document (7014112) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 Service Pack 3

Situation

While trying to setup a chroot environment in a SLE11SP3 rescue system the bash returns:
Rescue:~ # mount /dev/system/root /mnt
mount: special device /dev/system/root does not exist

Resolution

There are two possible solutions:
  1. Instead of /dev/$VGNAME/$LVNAME please use the devices available in /dev/mapper/$VGNAME-$LVNAME (e.g. /dev/mapper/system-root).

  2. Run the vgmknodes command which will create the necessary links in /dev

Cause

/dev/$VGNAME/$LVNAME are symlinks to the device files in /dev/mapper which do not get created by default in the SLE11SP3 rescue system.
