Suse Manager migration from 3.2 to 4.0 throws error when running the schema-upgrade from 3.2.21-3.31.1 to 4.0.14-3.3.4

This document (7024187) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Manager 4.0

Situation

When running a migration from the latest version of SUSE Manager 3.2 to (also) the latest version of SUSE Manager 4.0 an error is shown regarding a failed schema-upgrade migration:

Upgrade database schema...
Was not able to find upgrade path in directory [/etc/sysconfig/rhn/schema-upgrade].
Schema upgrade: [susemanager-schema-3.2.21-3.31.1] -> [susemanager-schema-4.0.14-3.3.4]
Searching for upgrade path to: [susemanager-schema-4.0.14-3]
Searching for upgrade path to: [susemanager-schema-4.0.14]
Searching for start path:  [susemanager-schema-3.2.21-3]
Searching for start path:  [susemanager-schema-3.2.21]
 09:55:39   FAILURE!

Resolution

The missing directory needs to be created. Afterwards the migration can be run again:

mkdir /etc/sysconfig/rhn/schema-upgrade/susemanager-schema-3.2.21-to-susemanager-schema-4.0.0

Cause

A missing directory. This issue has been fixed upstream and the next version of SUSE Manager 4.0 (after the publish date of this article) will include the fix.

Additional Information

This is a very similar error that happens from time to time in other schema-upgrades, see for instance:
