Long supportconfig run times on systems with DAX memory

This document (000020270) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP 15
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP 12

System having DAX Memory (e.g Intel Optane memory)

Situation

Run times for supportconfig on systems with DAX memory are very long and intensive (hours or days) and/or the supportconfig files are in the Gigabytes.

Resolution

Include the following options on the command line each time you run supportconfig.
supportconfig -o CRASH,LDAP,OFILES,SSSD

As an alternative, you can edit the /etc/supportconfig.conf file to make these options persistent. The /etc/supportconfig.conf file does not exist by default and must be created. Add the following to the configuration file, and run supportconfig as usual:

OPTION_CRASH=0
OPTION_LDAP=0
OPTION_OFILES=0
OPTION_SSSD=0

Running supportconfig with these options is a reasonable workaround. If these files are necessary to your case or this doesn't resolve the long run times, please do not hesitate to open a support request with SUSE Support.

Cause

The reason for this is lsof handling on DAX filesystems.

Status

Additional Information

The particulars of why support config has long run times on DAX systems and how to adjust lsof parameters to avoid these issues are being investigated by SUSE Engineering and the supportconfig project
