How to set the hostid on SUSE Linux Enterprise

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

Need to set hostid for third party programs
/etc/hostid does not exist

Resolution

You can set the hostid by running

hostid yourhostid

where yourhostid can be decimal, or in hex form 0xNNNNNNNN. This will create the /etc/hostid file.

For example, the following two statements are equivilant:
hostid 0x1a2b3c4d
hostid 439041101

Additional Information

The linux man page on hostid has more details. Type 'man hostid' from a command shell to view this. The 'q' key will exit out of the man page viewer.
