How to enable AHCI support after install

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

Linux was installed onto SATA hard drives that were in ATA mode. When AHCI mode is enabled, Linux will not boot.

Resolution

The Linux kernel is modular in nature. The RAM disk/kernel image used to boot up Linux holds the initial modules that are used to get the system up; after the initial boot other modules are loaded as needed. In this case, the AHCI kernel modules were not included in the RAM disk based on the initial install.

In case something goes wrong, please have the rescue CD (CD 1 or the DVD) for the appropriate service pack that you are using.

process

Open /etc/sysconfig/kernel for editing
Locate the line below starting with:
INITRD_MODULES="..."
Add the ahci module name within the quotes.Be careful where the module goes within the quotes. Place the AHCI driver before the ATA drvier, since you want it to load first.

INITRD_MODULES="processor thermal ahci ata_piix fan jbd ext3 edd"
```
Save and close the file
Remake the kernel image.
mkinitrd
Reboot
