Banner Page Printing As "Guest" When Printing Through Samba

This document (7004787) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

Active Directory (AD) users, while logging on and printing through samba, continue to have the banner page printed as the "Guest" user despite authenticating as their normal user.  Even when the guest user is denied access to printing the banner page is printed with the username guest.

Resolution

Make sure that on the local workstation that there isn't a user being stored to authenticate to the server.  In this case a guest user existed locally (IE Domain/Guest).  Samba, on the server, was configured to strip off the domain (winbind use default domain = yes).  When it encountered the user being logged in with by the Microsoft client, the Domain was stripped off (even though it was a different domain name than the server) and the user Guest, with a valid password, was presented to the server and logged in.

Ultimately this is a software bug with the Microsoft OS.  The OS passed in the stored credentials instead of the credentials being authenticated with.  On a Windows 7 workstation, the user profiles are stored under CONTROL PANEL > USER ACCOUNTS > CONFIGURE ADVANCED USER PROFILE PROPERTIES

After removing the bad entry from this list the authenticated credentials were passed during authentication, the user is able to print, and the banner page now reports the username for the print job (instead of Guest).
