Windows7 client as Member of a Samba Domain

This document (7005131) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

A Windows7 client can not join a Samba Domain hosted on a SLES  Server.
Windows7 support had been added to Samba after SLES11 was released thus the Samba version on the SLES11 media lacks this functionality.

Resolution

Until a Maintenance Update is released, SUSE Technical Services can provide fixed packages for SLES11.
Customers with a valid support contract can open a Service Request and ask for a PTF.
Additional to the PTF a few configuration settings are required:
On the Windows 7 client, two Registry settings need to added prior to joining the domain:

     HKLM\System\CCS\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters
            DWORD DomainCompatibilityMode = 1
            DWORD DNSNameResolutionRequired = 0

Other configuration settings should NOT be touched.

Additional Information

Due to technical reasons this remains unsupported on SLES10 and it's Service Packs.
Required changes to the SLES10 codebase would be far too intrusive.
Customers having requirements for Windows7 clients need to update to SLES11 and the latest available Samba version thereon.
