LVM pvmove fails and file system hangs after maintenance update for SLES10 SP4

This document (7010125) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP4

Situation

File system hangs and command does not return the prompt when executing pvmove.

Resolution

The issue is due to a bug in the new code which suspends the device but does not resume it. An interim solution is to resume the device manually using dmsetup:

# dmsetup resume device_name

Where device_name is meant to be the filename under /dev/mapper.

Additional Information

This happens specifically with version lvm2-2.02.17-7.36.1 which is provided with patch slesp4-lvm2-7916 of January 13th 2012.

The bug has already been reported to engineering and a temporary fix is available. For further information please open a Service Request and mention this TID.
