YaST fails with "Internal error ... invalid byte sequence in UTF-8"

This document (7018056) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 1 (SLES 12 SP1)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 2 (SLES 12 SP2)

Situation

YaST fails with "Internal error ... invalid byte sequence in UTF-8"

Resolution

Your system, or parts of it, is indeed using a character encoding other than UTF-8, such as ISO-8859-1 or Shift-JIS.

As of SLE12-SP2, YaST assumes the system runs in UTF-8. There are multiple ways for YaST to read configuration and text from the system and so far we do not have a fix. If you can identify the text involved, remove it or replace with ASCII.

Please open up a Service Request with our technical support organization, so that we can make sure your case is covered by a fix.
