This document (7023708) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE CaaS Platform 3.0
SUSE Linux Enterprise Module for Containers 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Module for Containers 15

Situation

A security problem was identified where a root user in a container was able to overwrite the runc container runtime outside of the container, so effectively gain host root code execution.

Affected are machines / users running containers with untrusted code in it.

Resolution

SUSE has released updates  for the "runc" and "docker-runc" packages that mitigate the problem.
See the CVE-2019-5736 page for details on the fixed package versions and patch names.

Customers using the SUSE Linux Enterprise Module for Containers 12, should migrate to the "docker-runc" package.
This is possible by installing the "docker-runc" package, which will remove the obsolete "runc" package.

Cause

Additional Information

Note: Running containers will not need to be restarted after the update.
