Clocksource "tsc" not available on virtual environment

This document (7024254) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 (Service Pack 3)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 12 (Service Pack 3)

Situation

As per SAP Note 2753418, SAP HANA 2 SPS04 looks for the clocksource timer "tsc" in:

 /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/available_clocksource

and

 /sys/devices/system/clocksource/clocksource0/current_clocksource.

However on some virtualization and/or cloud solutions with kernel version 4.4.178-94.91 or lower, the "tsc" is not available at the aforementioned locations.

As a result, SAP HANA makes an entry in the SAP HANA Alert log, which in turn may concern customers.

Resolution

Upgrade the SLES12 SP3 OS kernel to at least:

 kernel-default-4.4.180-94.103.1

or later.

Cause

Additional Information

Please note that the kernel version 4.4.180-94.103.1 is only available for SLES for SAP Applications or SUSE LTSS (Long Term Service Pack Support)

The related SAP Note is:

2859234 - SAP HANA Timer Fallback alert on SLES 12 SP3
