Cloning of a channel with thousands of packages fails with "500 Internal Server Error"

Environment

SUSE Manager 5.0 Server


Situation

Cloning a channel with high number of packages (e.g. RES-AS 8 channel with 35601 packages) from webUI, the webpage remains loading after several hours.

If such a channel is cloned from command line interface, it fails with "500 Internal Server Error" error.

Resolution

Increase the Java memory by edit /etc/rhn/rhn.conf and appending this parameter:

taskomatic.java.maxmemory=8192

Restart spacewalk-service status:

# spacewalk-service restart

Cause

Not enough dedicated java memory to clone a channel with the high number of packages.
