systemd unit of third party software reports status bad after upgrade to SLES 15 SP6

This document (000021696) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 for SAP Applications Service Pack 6
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 Service Pack 6

Situation

Third party software with a systemd unit is installed on SLES 15 SP5 or older and after upgrade to SP6 the systemd service reports status "bad" as outlined below:

systemctl status <service>.service
● <service>.service - <...>
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/<service>.service; bad; preset: disabled)\

This is also visible by executing

systemctl is-enabled <service>.service
> Failed to get unit file state for <service>.service: Too many levels of symbolic links

Resolution

This issue is caused by the 'Alias=' line in the "[install] section" of the service file. It creates a symlink in the /etc/systemd/system subdirectory, due to changes introduced with a newer systemd version in SLES 15 SP6 this causes the "Too many levels of symbolic links" behavior.

To resolve the issue, just remove this symlink.

rm /etc/systemd/system/<service>.service

Status
