Today, SUSE Linux, the international Open Source technology leader and solutions provider, announced the implementation of mySAP.com on "SUSE Linux Enterprise Server", one of the most advanced enterprise Linux computing systems, at the SUSE Nuremberg headquarters. Since the beginning of this year, SuSE Linux has been utilizing SAP's enterprise resource planning tool on Compaq hardware for the company's business operations.
Since mid-2001, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is certified for mySAP.com and can be deployed from corporate users throughout the world with full support by SAP AG and SUSE Linux AG. "mySAP.com offers us reliable and tested modules for the reproduction of our company's logistics and accounting & finance processes," explained Ludwig Ehnes, SAP Project Manager at SUSE Linux AG. In addition to tasks such as the production, warehousing, and sales of software and hardware products, SUSE Linux AG also uses the new ERP system to handle offers and invoices for training, support, and consulting services. The migration to mySAP.com is taken in gradual steps. Since the effective startup on January 1, up to 120 employees at the SUSE Nuremberg headquarters have been working with the modules SD (Sales & Distribution), MM (Materials Management), FI (Finance), and CO (Controlling). Next, SUSE plans the implementation of the customer relationship management tool myCRM.com with an integrated e-commerce solution. Thus, SUSE is one of the first companies worldwide that deploys mySAP.com both on servers and workstations under a Linux operating system.
SUSE Linux AG utilizes four Compaq ProLiant series machines as server platform for the central mySAP.com installation; two Compaq ProLiant DL580 systems for the SAP R/3 installation and the SAP DB installation, and two Compaq ProLiant ML530 systems as development and test servers.
Besides the evaluation of the company's processes and the subsequent customizing of the SAP R/3 modules, the consolidation of comprehensive master data was a major milestone of SUSE SAP project. Before the ERP system's final implementation, a wide range of surrounding activities such as extensive quality assurance tests, programming of company-specific modifications, the integration of suppliers and service partners in the ERP system, and the training of the staff had to be carried out.
"We have gained extensive system know-how through our contribution to the SAP LinuxLab. Thus, most of the implementation was realized by our own staff," added Ludwig Ehnes. In the SAP LinuxLab, hardware suppliers such as IBM, Compaq, and Hewlett-Packard collaborate with SAP and Linux specialists like SUSE on the adaptation of Linux platforms to mySAP.com.
