Configured file systems do not mount

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

File systems configured in the /etc/fstab file do not mount at boot time.
Configured file systems don't mount post boot.

Resolution

There are several reasons why a file system configured in the /etc/fstab file will not mount. Some of the reasons include:
  • Invalid device
  • Unformatted device
  • Incorrect mount point
  • Configuration error
If a file system does not mount at boot time, you should attempt to mount it manually. If there are no errors from the mount command, then validate the configuration options in /etc/fstab.

If there are errors, write down the errors, and resolve the issues mentioned.

You can also look in dmesg output, /var/log/messages and /var/log/boot.msg for clues as to why the file system did not mount at boot time.
