Additional kernel modules not added to the initrd when specified in "/etc/dracut.conf"

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

Situation

When adding additional kernel modules to be included in the initrd using the "add_drivers+=" option in "/etc/dracut.conf" the modules are not present after having executed "mkinitrd" to re-create the initrd.

Resolution

For now the following workaround can be used to add modules to the initrd;

dracut --force --add-drivers <module_name> /boot/<initrd-kernel_version>

For example if the "qla2xxx" modules is to be added to the initrd and the kernel version is "3.12.28-4-default" the command will be:

dracut --force --add-drivers qla2xxx /boot/initrd-3.12.28-4-default

Cause

Reported to engineering, will be fixed with a future maintenance release.

After specifying additional kernel modules in the "/etc/dracut.conf" file and then executing "mkinitrd" the following messages can be seen;

To view the contents of the initrd the "lsinitrd" command can be used, to specifically see only which kernel modules are currently included in the initrd the following example command can be used;

lsinitrd | grep -i 'ko'
