Master TID: Migrating a regular SLES to SLES for SAP

This document (7018744) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 15
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 11

Situation

This document has a collection of useful technical documents about the migration of a regular SLES server to a SLES for SAP applications server.

Note: This conversion is not possible in public cloud, with the exception of BYOS systems.

Resolution

Cause

Instead of performing a new-installation it is also possible to use the above migration tools provided by SUSE.

NOTE:
SLES and SLES for SAP are different products. Some features of SLES for SAP like extended lifecycle and High Availability are not included in SLES and may require additional subscriptions, blocking the migration.
Thus, a migration from SLES for SAP to SLES is not recommended and not supported as additional SAP packages might break.

While it is possible to register a SLES with a SLES for SAP activation key, this is not recommended.
The SLES product does not come with ESPOS, LTSS and HA like SLES for SAP and esp. the missing LTSS raises problems when the Service Pack installed is not the current one. Because of that, such a system is not considered as supported.

The other way round, it is not possible to register a SLES for SAP product with a SLES entitlement.

Additional Information

On SLES12 starting with Service Pack SP3 and on SLES15 starting with SP1 the migration RPM is included in the regular repository. The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications documentation Guide is  also mentioning the migration process in a separate chapter.
