SLES installer may hang when updating megaraid_sas driver during SLES installation

This document (7022804) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 3 (SLES 12 SP3)

Situation

When updating the megaraid_sas driver during SLES 12 SP3 installation, the installer may hang on the interface when searching for storage devices.

Resolution

This issue can be resolved by using a new version of the SLES 12 SP3 kernel that includes a patch for this bug.  Use SLES 12 SP3 maintenance kernel update version 4.4.92-6.18.1 or newer.

There is also a work around that does not involve updating the kernel.  The work around is to only update the megaraid_sas driver after completing the installation of SLES.

Steps to update the driver after SLES installation:

1. Open a terminal and change to root user.

2. Change directory:
 cd /run/media/(USERNAME)/CDROM/linux/suse/x86_64-sles12/install

 3. Install new megaraid_sas driver:
rpm -ivh lsi-megaraid_sas-kmp-xxx.x86_64.rpm 4. Reboot the system.

Cause

This issue is caused by a bug in the megaraid_sas driver that is in SLES 12 SP3.  When the driver is unloaded it does not completely release the pci io resource.  This causes the installer to hang when attempting to search for storage devices and load the new megaraid_sas driver.
