IBM Power (ppc64le) virtual machines appear as physical systems in SCC

This document (7023484) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 15
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 12

Situation

While registering IBM Power (ppc64le) virtual machines to the SUSE Customer Center (SCC), those are marked as physical systems, not as virtual systems.

Resolution

Although the subscription count appears as being overused, there was no negative impact towards any ppc64le SLES subscriptions.

However, the SUSEConnect update released August/2024, suseconnect-ng version 1.11, now detects the LPAR virtualization.

Cause

SUSEConnect prior to v 1.11 was not able to detect the hypervisor on ppc64le.

Additional Information

This issue has a root cause in a bug in the SUSEConnect code, and as such will not cause any license compliance problems for customers.
