OpenSSH maintenance update breaks GSSAPI login

This document (7023532) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 15

Situation

After installation of the OpenSSH  7.6p1-9.3.1 maintenance update package, the SSH client will hang when trying a GSSAPI interactive login to a remote machine.

Resolution

An emergency update for OpenSSH that fixes this issue is being worked on. In the meantime, installing the previous version 7.6p1-7.8_9.3.1, for example with "zypper in --oldpackage openssh-7.6p1-7.8_9.3.1" can be used as a workaround. Alternatively, a PTF package with the fix may be requested from SUSE Linux Support.

Cause

An incomplete patch accidentally disables GSSAPI authentication of the client.
