rpm --verify denotes failure M - "Mode differs"

This document (000020943) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15

Situation

With the latest version of multipath-tools on SLES 15 all Service Packs, 'rpm -V' reports a failure 'M' - "Mode differs - permission/file types".
The verification failure points to the /run/multipath directory:

# rpm --verify multipath-tools
.M.......  g /run/multipath

The versions prior to the latest updates don't show the erroneous note (unless any other modifications were done and rpm reports them correctly), showing no failure in the verify output :

# rpm --verify multipath-tools
#

The following multipath-tools versions report the failure 'M':

SLES15-SP4 - multipath-tools-0.9.0+62+suse.3e048d4-150400.4.7.1
SLES15-SP3 - multipath-tools-0.8.5+126+suse.8ce8da5-150300.2.14.1
SLES15-SP2 - multipath-tools-0.8.2+182.6d41865-150200.4.14.1
SLES15-SP1 - multipath-tools-0.7.9+232+suse.cbc3754-150100.3.20.1
SLES15         - multipath-tools-0.7.3+173+suse.7dd1b01-150000.3.29.1

Resolution

The multipath-tools update for all SLES 15 Service Packs released March/2023 includes the patch to resolve the problem.

Cause

The problem is the following line in the spec file:
- %ghost /run/multipath
