SUSE Manager client encounters issues with patching while subscribed to Installer Updates channel

This document (000021514) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
SUSE Manager 4.3 Server

Situation

The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is a SUSE Manager client and is subscribed to a channel that provides installer updates, for example the channel SLE15-SP4-Installer-Updates for x86_64. This SUSE Manager Server client is not used as an installation source for other SLES servers. The server may not be patched, updated, or upgraded, because the package manager is encountering problems related to the updates in the Installer Updates channel.

For example, the following zypper output shows an issue with applying a patch from the Installer Updates channel:
# zypper patch
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...
Resolving package dependencies...
3 Problems:
Problem: the installed zypper-1.14.50-21.1.x86_64 requires 'libzypp.so.1722()(64bit)', but this requirement cannot be provided
Problem: the installed zypper-1.14.50-21.1.x86_64 requires 'libzypp.so.1722()(64bit)', but this requirement cannot be provided
Problem: the installed cloud-regionsrv-client-plugin-ec2-1.0.2-150000.6.96.1.noarch requires 'cloud-regionsrv-client >= 6.0.0', but this requirement cannot be provided

Problem: the installed zypper-1.14.50-21.1.x86_64 requires 'libzypp.so.1722()(64bit)', but this requirement cannot be provided
...

Resolution

The resolution for this issue is to unsubscribe this client from the channel that provides the installer updates. This can be done in the WebUI, by selecting the affected client and going to the 'Software' tab, then the 'Software Channels' tab, and deselecting the Installer Updates channels here.

If there are many affected clients, it may be easier to use the System Set Manager (SSM) to remove the channels. To do so, go to the Systems > System List, check the box next to each affected system, then go to Systems > System Set Manager, and click the link named Manage system' channel memberships. The base channel does not need to be changed. The Installer Updates channel can be unsubscribed at the page named 'Child Channels'.

Cause

The Installer Updates channel provides updates that are intended for the installation system and not for the SLES server. The software in here is not compatible with SLES, so the SLES server should not be subscribed to these channels.
