How To: Remote Installation Using SSH or VNC

This document (3764401) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Desktop 10
SUSE Linux Desktop 9
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9

Situation

How to set up a remote installation using SSH or VNC.

Resolution

Particularly useful for headless blade servers, or frigid server rooms, an install can be started which will allow for remote control during the installation process. There are two protocols available for remote control, SSH and VNC. To configure, insert CD1* from the media set of the selected product, then prior to pressing [Enter] on Installation, entering the following into the Boot Options field:

For SSH:
ssh=1 sshpassword=sshpassword

For VNC:
vnc=1 vncpassword=vncpassword

After pressing [Enter], the regular install will begin. However, because of these parameters, the installation will prompt to confirm the use of DHCP. Once accepted (or modified for a static address), the screen will display that the install is ready to be connected to via the chosen protocol.

You can now leave the 58°F server room, and complete the install from the comfort of your own cubicle. Simply connect to the system via the selected protocol as specified.

Additional Information

* If installing from a Service Pack CD1, the installation will prompt for the shipping CD1 prior to continuing.
