i5 Installation Power5 (ppc)

This document (3982682) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

You have an i5 machine and following the installation instructions, Chapter 2.4 "Preparing an Installation on IBM iSeries Models" page 28ff from the preparation.pdf the kernel fails to boot. Immediately after the SMS menu you get something like:

DEFAULT CATCH!, exception-handler=f

Resolution

The Installation instructions in this Chapter assume that you install on an non-i5 machine, probably an older iSeries. So the NWSD points to the wrong kernel, your IPL Stream file reads something like:

/qopt/SLES100.001/ISERIES64

while the machine needs the kernel every p5 or openpower uses, so it should read instead

/qopt/SLES100.001/SUSEBOOT/inst64

also the Online at IPL = *NO does not apply, it should be

Online at IPL = *YES
