Here When You Need Us

Changing an Openldap user object password using Yast User Management module moves the user out to the base dn

This document (7000311) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 SP1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1
Openldap 2

Situation

If the ldap client is configured only with the basic options, all users will be created with the base dn defined in /etc/ldap.conf.

Resolution

YaST User Management uses the base DN stored in /etc/ldap.conf, in order to create users, groups, etc. If you want to customize the bases for user and/or groups, you need to use the Yast Ldap Client advanced options and create the configuration data object in Openldap.

In order to create the data object with this information, go to YaST/Network Services/Ldap Client/Advanced Configuration/Administration Settings and check "Create Default Configuration Objects". Also, under the "Client Settings" tab define the "Naming Contexts" for your users and groups. Finish the configuration and you will be able to change the password using "Yast User Management," and the users will not fall back to the base DN anymore.
