YaST on SLES10 stops with Segmentation fault

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10

Situation

It is not possible to start the YaST Software module (yast2 sw_single) in ncurses mode. It stops with a segmentation fault message. The full error message can be for example:

ERROR: YaST got signal 11 at YCP file /usr/share/YaST2/clients/sw_single.ycp:38
ERROR: /sbin/yast: line 276: 7705 Segmentation fault $ybindir/y2base "$module""$@" ncurses $NCTHREADS

Resolution

Delete the directory /y2update and try again.
