Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9

Situation

heartbeat is a common name for the High Availability application of Linux.

In SLES9 there is heartbeat, also referred to in later documentation as heartbeat 1. This heartbeat 1 is relatively simple, has no GUI and configuration is done filebased. Documentation on heartbeat 1 can be found at

   http://www.linux-ha.org

In SLES10 there is heartbeat 2. This introduces a GUI, CIB and CRM and is a major step from heartbeat 1. There is a conversion tool to update heartbeat 1 clusters to heartbeat 2.

In SLES11 there is openais. Openais is the successor of heartbeat2. It also provides a GUI and CIB but also a new elements to the cluster while still using the Resource Agents from previous versions. heartbeat 2 from SLES10 can be updated directly to SLES11 openais.
