kdump setup on IBM POWER9

This document (7022751) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 4 (SLES 11 SP4)

Situation

Due to the nature of the kdump environment, it is possible that an IBM POWER9 machine will hang or fail to reboot after a crash,  and the vmcore may not be captured.

Resolution

To avoid these kinds of problems, the following setup steps are suggested:

1. Edit /etc/sysconfig/kdump file and set KDUMP_COMMANDLINE_APPEND to
"maxcpus=1 noirqdistrib irqpoll"

2. Restart kdump service to pick up the changes:
$ service boot.kdump restart
